Penn and Daria. Oh boy. So let’s start with, the characters are in high school. And albeit they do both turn 18 during this book, it starts at age 14. Now, Daria is the rich daughter that feels like she is overlooked throughout life. Penn, and his sister, are growing up on the other side of town, the poor side. Two people from two totally different worlds. Penn and Daria are both strongly attracted to each other but everything and everyone is against them.
Daria, although some of her feelings are warranted, she comes across like a spoiled, ungrateful, manipulative brat. Penn, I truly feel for throughout the story and want him to succeed. He was dealt a difficult life. There are many disturbing issues in this book and warnings and triggers should be noted.
Once you fast forward to around the 70% mark, the book becomes tolerable and somewhat good. There was just so much, too much, Daria crap going on, and for too long. So the last 30% of the book, it was nice to see everyone take responsibility for their stupid, childish, manipulative, jealous ways. I did like seeing the growth in the characters and the final results.

So good
Okay fine ... I am addicted to LJ Shen’s stories. I almost gave up my Saturday night out with friends to keep reading. All that angst!

I did not realize this was a second generation series but I was lucky because I read the first generation series not that long ago. When I read that series I did not read the parents of the FMCs character as it was a prequel. I don’t think it is needed for the book.
Although I did enjoy this book there were some things that bothered me. I felt that this was so close to being like mean girls. Also, parents do not communicate with their children that are old enough to understand. The relationship between Daria and her Mom fell apart because they didn’t communicate properly.
I however loved the banter between Penn and Daria. I did not like his sister and in my opinion does not deserve to be forgiven. I gave this book 4 ⭐️ 2 🌶️ I loved that she saved all her firsts for him and he definitely took them.
I recommend this book if you like a broody boy and a snarky sassy princess. This is the book for you.
Happy reading everyone 📚

Penn and Daria
Daria, perfect on the outside, a mess on the inside. Maybe dear old dad contributed with the whole Hulk monster thing.
I thought Melody was as strong, I thought I remember her having quite the backbone in her story. She sure didn’t in this story.
Penn, the good looking star athlete from the wrong side of the tracks.
That’s were similarities end. Their story has plenty of twists and turns. It was pretty good but felt a little off towards the end. I get why it unfolded the way at it did but I wish there was as more.

I could not stop reading this book! Daria broke my heart right from the beginning. As a young girl, she felt like her mother saw her as inadequate, and that she had to (yet, still could not) compete with a stranger for her mother's affection. This brought her to do something that changed the course of several lives and, for years, caused enormous feelings guilt and destructive anger. And not just for her.
Sometimes the 'mean girl' is mean, only as a way to release the pressure of pain, to keep her own hurt from becoming so big it destroys her. And sometimes, it destroys her anyway.

This book was heavy on the drama, sometimes unnecessarily so. The h was petty and selfish- she couldn't take on another viewpoint which got on my nerves. I connected more with the H who stood by a lie in order to help others. He was straight up, even when he caught feelings and I appreciated that. Overall, it was a decent read but I'm not sure I'm going to continue with the series.
