Enemies to lovers is one of my top jams. These two oozed all kinds of hate and angst. There was a lot going on, there was never a dull moment. There were some really good parts and some I didn’t understand why they were in the story. I do have to admit that Daria really didn’t grow on me until the end. But overall, I devoured this in one sitting and I can’t wait to read more about the other kids.

4 1/2 stars
Daria Followhill seems to have the perfect life that girls dream of, yet it is all a facade as she is truly a poor little rich girl. Daria is lashing out for attention from her mother who is too busy trying to right wrongs of the past to notice.
Penn Scully is trying to make his future brighter even though he is bogged down by the past. Revenge is what he wants from Daria as she is the one who made his life spin out of control.
Daria and Penn are two strong willed people who are working to a future neither can see. Shen write a book that makes me forget they are young 17/18year olds still growing into their better self. The twist, turns, are you freaking kidding me moments make the book so complex.

Edge of my seat the entire listen. LJ writes the BEST bully romances.

I will say I was a bit miffed at one of my favorite #HotHoles for like 90% of the book. I would imagine it's a hard line to write 'bad parents' that were once your main characters. But I do love spin off series where favorites now have kids.

The narrators were great. I couldn't stop listening.

Daria Followhill.
I hate her with every fiber of my being!

This was my first LJ Shen book, and it did not disappoint!

Daria Followhill is one of the most popular girls at school. Dare I say, Queen Bee? She is, but the one thing she can’t seem to do is get her mother’s approval. No, her mom seems to only have eyes for a different girl in her ballet class. A girl that seems to already have it all.

One day, she’s really feeling down about her mother’s blatant disregard for her during ballet, so when she sees the other girl’s dreams coming true, she becomes very upset. She goes to a coffee shop, with all the intention of destroying the girl’s future, and meets a boy, Penn Scully who has been pining for her from afar.

They kissed, and he made her promise to save all her firsts for him. But after that fateful day, everything fell apart for the both of them.

Daria and Penn, they were both broken in their own ways. Daria may have been the Queen of her school, but she was hiding so much pain. She felt unloved by the people who were supposed to love her the most. And Penn? He had a really sh*tty childhood with terrible parents.

These two went through so much separately and together. They had to go through tough circumstances and make hard decisions, and they ultimately had to learn that family isn’t always the people you share blood with.

Daria really changed a lot. She was so unhappy and was dealing with it in an unhealthy manner. She took it upon herself to work on her mental health so she could truly be happy and not live in anger.

I loved how Penn changed as well. He was also very angry, even with Daria. He wasn’t kind to her, but when he realized what she was feeling, he was the one that was there for her. I loved that he never gave up on her and was protective of her.

I don’t normally read high school romance, but I was able to forget their ages because this story was that interesting. There was so much angst, but I loved it.

4.5 ⭐️ 2.5

I really want to like this book but it’s an extremely difficult read. Don’t get me wrong, the concept is THERE. Such a cool story, I literally could not stop reading it. However, the writing style took me for a loop. Not only is the dialogue really cringy and outdated, the author’s writing style is difficult to follow in general. It gave Degrassi, mean girls, Hannah Montana type conversations throughout the book. And don’t get me started with the high school musical era after school special type reconciliation dialogue at the end. After a while, It was too corny to handle. The teenagers were way too expressive and vulnerable about their feelings at times and it felt really inauthentic. I did try to rectify my feelings by reminding myself that this was published in like 2018 or something, but no one talked the way the kids in this book talked offline. Like I said, I could not put the book down. I read it all in one night. It was great IN THEORY. But, this book is only tolerable if you can get past the whole “I’ve never heard an actual teenager speak in my life” aura this author has projected onto this particular work.

I have been anticipating this book for a while. Shen's original series about the Hotholes of Todos Santos was so good and to see the offspring, the next generation of these characters has been so exciting to finally see. Shen gave very little away about this book and I am so glad. I was expecting one thing and got another. It was a delight to read from cover to cover that as soon as I finished it I went back and read all the best parts of the book.

So this book follows the first of the Totholes (children of the Hotholes), Daria. In the original Hotholes series they already set her up to be a bit of a brat. You see a little bit of that in the prologue but you already see another side to her. Daria is so much more than I thought she would be. She had so many more layers to her. You felt for her. You felt her pain, her desire for love, her need to fit in and be the top dog. She quickly grew on me and I wanted to see her on top.

And then there's Penn. This boy is the next generation Hothole. He has the swagger, the anger, the hotness that you expect from a HotHole. You see why he's angry, why he's mad at the world and you feel for him.

You see how these two clash and come together time and again and you start to root for them. But then you wonder if it is even possible. Their whole relationship is a push and pull and you just want to see where they end up.

I loved seeing more of Jaime and Mel. Jaime is still super swoon-worthy and while I did not like Mel in the beginning you do come to a place where you begin to understand her. It's hard to dislike someone who makes the same mistakes as so many moms out there. I think it ends in a place where you don't necessarily like her but you feel for her. But thank you LJ for more swoony Jaime. More Hotholes please!!!

What I also loved was seeing the other TotHoles, Vaughn, Knight, Bailey and Luna. I can't wait to read the next books so we can explore them and get to know them more.

Loved this book. Thanks LJ!
