What a ride!

There were so many twists and turns I don’t even know where to begin! Loved this book. The characters, the twists, and turns, and especially the ending!

.
I’ve read this book last week, and writing about it now still give me goosebumps, my heart is beating so fast because Daria feeling is haunting me. You really need to read it to feel this and understand what I want to tell you. It’s like someone came and stabbed my heart, this person took his time and let me taste this painful feeling with a little pleasure in it. You know the taste of a juicy strawberry, Pretty Reckless mean this to me.

I will not describe Daria because it’s will be a fat spoil for you, I will just say read each pages because at the end you will love her as your own daughter, and I not even a mother.

I cried so much, it was not happy tears. I don’t know I need to cry to wash this painful and lovely story. I felt as if I kept a big grudge, and I couldn’t get rid of it so I cried myself to sleep because it was Painful, Bitter but so damn beautiful but it felt so real.

Leigh writing this tiny review make me cry again because I felt so much, but still Daria’s story need to be read to understand this Bittersweet feeling. If I said I didn’t get enough of this book, it will be a god damn lie.

Penn and Via's arc was utter shit, are you kidding me

Honestly sometimes you just need a good kindle unlimited romance novel, and this was it! I loved Daria, I loved Penn and I loved their chemistry with each other. Made me wish that there were more stories with mean/"bad" female character as their protagonist.

It pains me to mark this book as a DNF. I love L.J. Shen! I tried going back to this book three times, with no luck. I was lost in all the inner dialogue and the lack luster story line. There was lots of snarky inner thoughts going on, but very little conversation between the characters. I wanted to like Pretty Reckless so bad. But after giving the story several tries I had to move on.

Update: I finished it. 3.75 stars. Glad I went back. Certainly not my favorite LJ Shen book.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bloom Books, and L.J. Shen for an eARC of this book!

I want to preface my review by saying this book wasn't personally for me, but I can totally see how it would appeal to a younger audience!

This was my first L.J. Shen read. I had super high expectations going into this book since I've seen good things on Bookstagram. The basic premise of the story is similar to the Twisted series by Ana Huang. Sunshine girl meets grumpy guy who is super possessive. Unfortunately this one didn't live up to the hype for me.

Immediately when starting the book, I noticed Shen's writing style would take a bit of getting used to. I found myself going back and needing to reread sentences to get a truly good grasp on what was being said. The characters were mean to each other, which is essential to the plot, but the snappy comebacks and insults were just not good.

The pacing of the story was fine, but I felt it could have been wrapped up 50 to 75 pages sooner. I would get to a point and think "Oh! This must be the end." Nope... it kept going and going and going. I appreciate that the author was trying to make a statement akin to "You never know what someone else is going through." I just felt the statement was made over and over. I got it after the first time and didn't need the big grand gesture from everyone at school, which was reminiscent of Mean Girls.

I do feel that Shen did a wonderful job portraying the difficulties teenagers have with their parents. The mother/daughter/sibling relationship was angsty and pretty spot on.

I'm giving this book 2.5 stars and rounding up. I'm not sure if I'll read more from Shen. It's probably a better read for someone in high school/college rather than myself - a 35 year old woman.

Daria was the perfect character. She was a character I wanted to hate, but the depths and inner thoughts made it impossible. I just felt bad for her. Dean was such a nice guy and literally amazing. The enemies to lovers trope was so well done in this book.
