made the mistake of watching the movie for this book when it first came out, but i liked the book a lot better. challenging to get through because of the realness of the situations the main character goes through.

I couldn't put it down but I also found the story a bit unremarkable. There were times when things felt like they were dragging and parts that felt like unnecessary filler.
if i had to guess, this book is pretty lowly rated because it's advertised as the next "gone girl," but honestly i didn't get the impression that this book was trying to be that at all. this book is the messy, complicated story of a little girl who was raped and not believed, and what happens when that girl grows up.
this isn't a thriller at all. there's a somewhat mysterious element of the event that ani constantly refers to that "changed everything" but that isn't even the crux of the story. it's all about her, who she was, who she grew up to be, and the ways that what happened to her ruined her life. i was endeared to her, even though she's supposed to be very unlikeable. she felt very real.
i listened to this book, although I know had I read it physically, the way in which they spell the main character's name (TiffAni, not just Tiffany) would have been enough to make me dnf this. but i did like the arc of her taking back her name and redefining what it means as something that belongs to just her.

I went into the book really liking it and reading it pretty quickly. The middle of the book got really intriguing but after the long awaited reveal it went downhill. The last third of the book was drawn out and the ending was pretty inconclusive.
I don't know how I feel about this book. I didn't connect with the main character, which is not unexpected considering how she is portrayed as superficial and utterly unlikable. But that also hurts the emotional impact of the story. Mostly I kept reading just to find out what happened, not necessarily because I cared about what happened.
rape, shootings, magazines, diets, nyc, main line. TifAni.
