A Complete Let Down after reading this author's more recent works. If you're going to write on topics as serious as school shootings, a little more tact and research could be employed

I wasn't a fan of this book. The main character was conceited and I hated her. I could tell what the author was trying to do with her, by having an outcast, who wanted to be on the inside, become someone that everyone (although definitely not me) wanted to emulate but it wasn't necessary to go as far as the author went with it. It became too superficial for me. Although the book wasn't terrible, I didn't enjoy it. I finished it because I was intrigued enough to want to know the ending but the ending was a disappointment as well.
Meh… the story was good in that I finished it, it was entertaining… there were some things I didn’t like. I’m not sure how I feel about Ani.

I was so engrossed with this book. I blazed through the pages, constantly wanting to know more, as it painstakingly strung me along. But I ended up feeling let down. I was unfulfilled at the end. I felt like something was missing, but I can't figure out what it is.
Update: Upon further reflection, I've bumped the book up a star. I still don't like the ending and I still feel like all the coincidences might be stretching it a bit much and there were too many things that were wtf-was-that-for. But I was completely enamored by it and couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the journey, even if the ending wasn't satisfying.

3.5 stars. I had a really difficult time rating this book because of my own personal biases. This story was sad, and super uncomfortable, and at times it made me feel sick. I don't even really know what I was hoping for... I think maybe I was hoping for vengeance. It wouldn't have been very realistic if she pulled a Girl With The Dragon Tattoo at age 14 though. The story itself was captivating and very interesting to read, however, I didn't love the main character as an adult. Perhaps anyone would have turned out the way she did after what she had been through though. I suppose at the end she did begin to accept herself for who she is, which showed good character development.
I wanted to like this book, but I felt that there was just too much trauma. For a book about rape and dealing with the aftermath of rape, why did there have to be so much violence?
