Some years ago, a New York Times reviewer (probably Frank Rich) noted a dearth of contemporary novels dealing with the Great American Novel theme of ambition, particularly among characters with whom readers are to sympathize. Well, here's a corrective to that, I guess, in the guise of the next entry in the Unreliable Narrator Suspense sub-genre, which I quite like. This one has a coming of age element that resonates more than the present-day observations on the New York bourgeoisie of marrying age. There's a motif of PTSD running throughout that is quite good. It's unfair to compare every novel with an unreliable female narrator and a relationship issue to Gone Girl, particularly in this case, where 100% of the action is pre-matrimonial. Nevertheless, if that hooks you into a good read, so be it :)

Meh. There were some parts that were interesting but I felt like nothing really happened after the big events.

I finished this book in less than 12 hours collectively, if that can tell you anything. Each chapter ended beautifully to keep me wanting more, revealing just enough to keep me excited and questioning.
I will not lie - I was both disgusted and heartbroken over some occurrences. But it really made me feel, which is something to say for a book.
Would highly recommend to people who love suspenseful books and strong female leads.

This one will stick with me for a while. I really struggled with the main character’s voice, which I found incredibly abrasive - but given the horrific trauma she endures and challenging dynamics at home, I also feel a lot of compassion for her.
For what it is, it sucks you in. Is it "good?" No. Does it take an appropriate, accurate look at rape, eating disorders and mental health? No. But is it simply written and easy to read? Yes. And you can love to hate, or rather strongly dislike, the entire cast of characters. A good take-along for vacation, but there's much to criticize if you want to bother going deeper in an otherwise shallow book.
This page turner will force you to look at the price of the desire of popularity in the face and consider it's value. At what point will you stand up for your truth?
