Gillian Flynn she ain’t! What a disappointment of a book. Weird, bizarre plot, one dimensional characters, and bad writing. Don’t recommend picking this one up.

I've come to be pretty skeptical about books that are compared to those by Gillian Flynn....this one just didn't hit the mark for me. I kept thinking that the author was trying too hard...and I was bothered by parts that I felt were added just for shock value but weren't subsequently explored in the storyline, or actually made no sense because of what is revealed in her tragic past.
TifAni FaNelli (known as Ani) has reinvented herself after suffering multiple traumas as a teenager. She now leads the life she has always dreamed of and will be marrying her wealthy fiance soon so you would think she would be happy ... An ok read, but ultimately disappointing.

The MC is so misogynistic and miserable it's a slog to get through.
This story has two sides to it: the present Ani who lives a lavish life in New York with a dream job and a dream fiancé, and the dark past that enveloped her life as the teenage TifAni. Ani is not necessarily the most likeable character – actually no one in the book really is – but as more of the story is revealed you understand what has led to the shell that Ani put up around herself. I tend to gravitate toward stories that flip between past and present and I think Jessica Knoll employs it as well as Gillian Flynn and Liane Moriarty, two of my favorite authors. I was a little worried she would take me down a cliché road, but she didn’t. It was original, kept me guessing, and was addictive to the point that I only put this book down to go to work. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys edgy main characters and psychological thrillers.

I went in blind on this one, read no reviews, only half watched the trailer for the Netflix series. It was much darker then I expected. CW: tons of eating disorder talk, tons of fat phobia, rape, explicit violence, school shooting. Basically, I would not have read this had I known. That said, it was well written (but there were some big editing errors), and I binged it over a couple of sessions. I don’t recommend it.
