Travels with Charley is an insightful portrait of early 60s America, and of the man who set out to discover it.
I see Steinbeck's approach to exploring as something of a way of life. He's always moving towards a destination without giving a damn whether he gets there or not. For those of us feeling the weight of our lives; chasing deadlines and worrying about reaching our goals, Steinbeck's approach to the scenic route is a welcome alternative. Of course, one doesn't need to drop everything and cram themselves into a van with a poodle to explore like Steinbeck. All one needs is to move through life with open eyes, open ears, and an open heart. It's amazing what you can find when you set out to look.

Such an enthralling commentary on American culture and life that still somehow holds true 65 years later. Steinbeck really had his finger on the pulse and some of his musings about his country ring near prophetic.

I am so sad to be done with this. Feels like saying goodbye to a dear friend.

A non-fiction story of a trip to around America with John Steinbeck and his dog. A master of storytelling telling his own story. A must read for anyone who appreciates Steinbeck or travel writing.

Still relevant. Steinbeck is a delight.
A little rambling in places but the power of the last section makes it worth while.
An incredible painting of life in all its grime and glory, told in sprawling postcard musings across the vast and changing landscapes of 1960s America.

Loved every moment of this deeply personal book.
