It was interesting seeing Steinbeck dip his toes into a new genre; the experimenting definitely made for a fun read, albeit with an occasionally slow pace.

This book will have you reflecting & dwelling on its contents more than any of Steinbeck’s other works.

Fascinating how a book can have you simultaneously home sick & longing to spread your wings.

A quiet, thoughtful road trip across America with John Steinbeck and his dog, Charley. It’s not a fast-paced novel, but it’s full of meaningful reflections that still feel relevant today. Steinbeck writes about loneliness, the deep need for human connection, and the harsh realities of racism and prejudice he encounters. If you enjoy slower, reflective books, this one’s worth the read.

Simply delightful, until it wasn't because he got to the southern United States. But then finishes on a much more cheery note.

Read this book with my boyfriend. The last two months have been a reading slump like never before! What with graduation and all, this book of travel and observance and the great unknown feels very apt.

This was a delightful book, quite different from any other Steinbeck I've read. It was a bit slow to finish for me and was more observational than poignant, but I really enjoyed it! It reminded me of my grandpa.

Reading this made me instantly understand why Steinbeck is such a beloved American writer. Amazing slice of American history. You can't read it and not A. Immediately want a dog and B. Immediately want to road trip around the US.

This was great. I honestly didn't think I would like this nearly as much as I did. In a lot of ways, Steinbeck does not take himself as seriously as he could, which lends this a great flavor. Travels with Charley's subject matter runs the spectrum from lighthearted to deadly serious and does it seamlessly and in style. Steinbeck's reflections take a few liberties with what he asserts is common thinking, but they're decent.
The timeliness of his observations on current events (for the early 1960s) was great. From Khrushchev's shoe-banging incident to Ruby Bridges integration, this book is a whole hell of a lot but it handles things brilliantly. The pace and the length of the book give us enough to enjoy without things getting long in the tooth. Bravo.

For a brief moment in time, the reading of Travels with Charley was in alignment with my own age and that of Steinbeck's when he traveled across America with his dog. Furthermore, his travels took place around the time of my birth. What a perfect opportunity to look back at what America was like when I joined the ride. Granted, the view from a white man in the early 1960's is not the same as what many others might have seen at the time and there were moments when I cringed at his characterizations. But very interesting, nonetheless. All in all, Steinbeck's humor and humanity made for an enjoyable and though-provoking read.
