I read this because Kealan was hilarious on the Horror Writers' Podcast, and I was like, it's 64 pages, I can read something that isn't romance for once. Really solid writing overall. I loved the initial scene with the kid and the main character; the dialogue between them was hella creepy and compelling. I was definitely late to an appointment because I couldn't stop reading that scene. I also loved all the little details, like
Spoilerhow the main character's breath started smelling bad because of the sour candy.
The ending was completely unexpected, at least for me, and I really wanted to tweet something like
Spoiler"tagging Sour Candy as m-preg lol"
but that is a gigantic spoiler. I'm giving it three stars because I stopped reading around 79% and could have lived without finishing it. But I like to finish things, so I did eventually. So basically, the beginning half was super gripping for me, but the rest of it was kind of eh. I think it could be that I'm just not that familiar with the conventions of the horror genre, and I wanted more scenes between the main character and the kid. I'm just more into character interaction that anything else in a story. But I can't complain about the plot; everything was "tied up" nicely, and the very last scene left me feeling totally creeped out, which is kind of the point of horror, so, well done, Mr. Burke.

Fast paced, page turner .  I don’t normally read ‘horror’ but as this can be read in under 3 hours I thought I’d give it a go.  Who is the main character the ‘son’ or the ‘dad’? Is the ending predictable, not that it matters because there is a twist. There’s a lot going on in these 74 pages, for all its spookiness I enjoyed this story and would recommend.
