Sour Candy is a gripping horror novella that expertly uses its short length to craft an intense and engaging experience. The fast-paced narrative and psychological twists creates a story that kept me on the edge of my seats. The descriptions of the Elders was not as disturbing as I think it could be, but creepy nonetheless. The complex interplay between reality and delusion adds a layer of mystery and fear, forcing readers to question what they perceive as real. This kind of storytelling can be particularly unsettling and thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impact on readers. An excellent choice for those who enjoy a quick horror that delves deep into the psyche and leaves them pondering long after they've finished reading.
I just discovered Burke with his book “Kin”. I’m used to full-length horror novels, not novellas, but really wanted to give Sour Candy a shot because I was pleasantly surprised by how Kin was such a spooky page turner.
I was definitely not disappointed with Sour Candy. I feel like maybe I’m giving it a 3.5 just because I’m not used to reading horror novellas and wish there had been more ; more back story, more spookiness, more depth. That being said tho I throughly enjoyed this little novella and thought that the premise was original and frightening . I found I sympathized greatly with Phil’s frustrations and how aggravated he seemed with his “situation” . And that ending! Spot on.
I’ll be reading all his books for sure.
3.5-4 out of 5!!!
