dark fast-paced

It was fine though I think if it was longer the plot could have been better fleshed out and really added the eeriness and gore to the story. I haven’t read many horror novels but if I had to compare them, I’d say I had more expectations from this one. It felt as if we came to an abrupt stop at the end and it’s the conclusion (?) hm. Would also like to add that it seemed odd to have this weird tidbit of information about the detective being abusive, though it merely mentions it then moves on. I didn’t find it necessary nor did it contribute to the story at all. Overall it just left me feeling meh about the whole thing.

Very creepy. Will read more of his work.

Yeah, I liked it fine. I feel “new” to horror and like I’m still calibrating how scary/tense a story like this is meant to be. I thought the plot itself was creepy and had scare potential but I didn’t feel unsettled, creeped out, or in edge as much as I was hoping I would. But perhaps I’m expecting darkness when it’s not about how bleak the imagery can be. I’d have preferred to see Phil’s decline rather than just told about it. Where’s the panic when Phil’s teeth start falling out or he touches his skin to feel it’s waxiness and maybe it has no elasticity. You know when you’re dehydrated and you pinch your skin but it doesn’t return to its normal state? It stays pinched longer than it should. I wanted more discomfort and tension. But I liked the plot! And I think I would read this author again. Perhaps I need to read a longer horror novel.
