Though this book has 529 pages and I'd say 200 or more missing. Parts were so rushed. I was so invested and enaged in the characters, plot and themes. Could have turned the last 100 into another novel. However a satisfying ending. I highly recommend this book

“Obstreperous is my favorite word. My brother is very obstreperous. Last month my favorite word was turgid. But you can’t use turgid that much. Not that many things are turgid, when you think about it.”
“You’re right about that,” said Tessie, laughing. “But obstreperous is all over the place.”

I know this is a groundbreaking book and I understand why, but I think all of it’s accolades come from the fact that it’s content and plot were revolutionary for its time. The story itself is dull. I don’t know how a book about a hermaphrodite could be dull, but it was. It was about 250 pages too long and I was bored through most of it.

Rereading October 2022:
It got even better. That ending always makes me cry.

Easy to read and hard to put down towards the end. Spent all day finishing it today. Fantastic family of characters. Especially Desdemona, the yia yia.

While it was slow at times, it was overall a wonderful read. I would have liked to have read more about Cal's transition to living as a man and a little less, perhaps, about Desdemona and Lefty (even though I really enjoyed their part of the story, as well- I just figure either cut a little or add another 100-150 pages to the book!). Anyway... excellent book. A little slow here and there, but overall fully enjoyable.
