So moving.

My two favorite things about this book:
- What it teaches about WWII in the Pacific area, especially regarding POWs in Japan. The Japanese side of the WWII conflict is largely glossed over in US history classes so nearly *everything* presented as part of Louis’ story was news to me.
- The way it is written— painstakingly researched but written in a highly compelling narrative style. It was engaging from beginning to end. I am very interested in reading more from this author because of this book.

The things I didn’t like are more due to incorrect expectations and, since this is a historical biography, then if something didn’t happen that way...then who am I to moan about it?!
But from reviews, summaries, and even the subtitle of the book, I was expecting Louis’ faith and forgiveness to be more present throughout the book and for there to be remorse and redemption on The Bird’s part.
Again, since it didn’t happen that way, then it is good that it wasn’t written that way! But I feel like a lot of things were setting up that expectation so I was left feeling a little disappointed.

An important story of survival and a spotlight on a truly amazing life. The writing was very well researched and reads well. It's gripping and full of detail and 100% true.

I'm a sensitive reader so the sections that detail the torture Louie endured as a POW in Japan during WWII were very difficult to read. I almost didn't finish the book and put it down more than once because I was so disturbed by the description of the torture he survived, but I'm glad I pushed past it and saw this book through to its conclusion.

I liked how the author saw everyone's stories through by including an epilogue. The audiobook is well read by Edward Herrman and ultimately I'd recommend this book to a wide variety of adult readers (and not just because the movie came out), just be forewarned should you count yourself a sensitive reader as I do!
