the prequel scene in the ocean was very distractingly terrible and I kept thinking about it and not enjoying any of the childhood and young adult. I think if the prequel hadn't been there I might have finished.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a truly powerful story, and drives me to tears every time I read it. (I have read it about 3 times now) This book definitely deserves more than 5 stars.
The opening of this book hooked me right away. It was exciting, well-written. I HAD to read the rest to find out what happened to Louie Zamperini -- what had led the Olympic trackster to that specific scene and how it unfolded afterwards. While the writing didn't stay as strong throughout the book as that opening, Zamperini's story and the focus on the Japanese engagement in the war remained a compelling read. It definitely reinforced my admiration for the generation who fought in WWII and gave me insight into what our soldiers faced in the Pacific.

Great book. This book has helped me realize, I don't read enough non-fiction. I had to remind myself at times that this was a true story. Makes one wonder how the story of Louie Zamperini’s dramatic life was not already told.
I was totally engrossed in this book and learned so much about the life of Louis Zamperini. I knew about the treatment of the Prisoners of War in Japan and the account of the tortured and bearings were horrific and how evil most of the prison guards were. This book is well written and gives dignity to the lives of the prisoners of war and to their families. Louis lived a life well lived and he was such a strong man who through the crusade of Billy Graham led him to follow Christ and give his life in following a Christian Faith. Some of the Japanese guards who tortured and executed many prisoners lived on into old age and it is difficult to read all of this and have a thought of care for them after all they did....but that is how war has been and we have to learn from that and try as best we can to live our lives differently and try to ensure that such horrors never happen again......but sadly as we know...they do. The book is an excellent account and leaves that memory in a dignified way to those who died in Japanese prisoner of war camps.
