Hillenbrand shared more than the saga of a single POW. She documented the horrors of war. The constancy of hope gave me strength.

One of my all time favourite books.

Brilliant writer! The part when they are in the ocean and he could feel the shark run up against his back in the lifeboat gave me chills. During the whole story all I could think was if I could survive sharks, plane crashes, isolation, fear, physical pain or a POW camp. Would I lose my mind? Would I help others? What an amazing story. Recommend to anyone who loves history.

holy shit

Not into historical, but wow! They couldn't break him. Some parts where heart wrenching!

A detailed and harrowing story of Louie Zamperini's time as an officer in WWII. More a history book than a memoir, it was filled with so much detail reading at times was belaboured and I wondered how they could know exact facts about some things. There were ample endnotes, so I'm sure the research was sound, but at times the detail took away from the story. Was a horrible account of life in POW camps in Japan, but with an end that added hope. Made me wish there was more psychological training given to soldiers and even local law enforcement to understand the humanity behind war and people across enemy lines. Overall a good read to understand what people went through. Saw the movie before finishing the last couple chapters. Was okay as a movie, but never gave half the depth of insight the book does. I would have done the movie as a trilogy: lost at sea, POW, at home. Also dramatized a few events that differ from the book version. A bit sad to see them do that when the real life version is pretty dramatic on its own.

The book is written well. The book tells a story that is so full it seems unbelievable. The olympics, the war, survival, suffering... It is an incredible tale. As a follower of Jesus, I found the last three chapters to be medicine to my soul. I didn't like the book once we returned home from the war... I dont like watching men implode. But it's what happened. And thankfully,he didn't stay there.

Louie Zamperini sounds like a true American hero. And I am glad that such men exist.
