I thought that his story was really incredible. This is no the type of book that I normally read. Some parts seem to go by slow while other I wished for more of the story. I did feel bad that he over shone many of his Air Force buddies. I feel like some of them deserve more recognition. I was surprised that the Bird was alive and never got captured after the war was done. It puzzled me that the Bird said that he would see Louie but then went back on his word.
My mother gave me this book about 4 Christmases ago. After years of my loving wife reminding me that I still need to read it, I finally had a chance to read it while I wait for my library books to come in. I am so glad that I finally read it. A story about a WW2 hero whose journey doesn't end when he gets home from war.
Truly a good read. So touching and heart wrenching at the same time.

Incredible to see how someone can persist despite wave after wave of difficulty and cruelty.
I think the book presents a much more complete picture than the movie. Still awe-inspiring but more real. It also gave a lot of background information and history which I found important and illuminating that I didn't know about when watching the movie. An amazing life.

Excellent book. This is not something I would have normally picked up but an unbelievable story!
