My 3rd grader is reading this for school. Very short, story of a family that escapes an undefined apocalyptic earth event in an old space ship. They were limited on what they could bring with them - and each person was only allowed one book. What would you choose and why?
Intriguing, thoughtful little novel. The first person narration is at once odd and engaging. Science fiction isn't often available at this age and, while I understand others criticism that the story is not perfectly crafted, this is one of those haunting stories that says more than you realize. It's slim size suggests a younger audience but the themes and language complexity gear it to 4th and up.
I remember reading this as a child and really falling in love with it. I have not read it since decades ago so not sure how it would hold up now
This book is intriguing but I don't love it. I like that it is science-fiction and short. I like that it's about humans discovering a new planet and trying to survive there like they would on Earth. I don't always like the style of the writing, but I think this is a good book if you're interested in reading science-fiction.
I read this in 6th grade and have since then looked for ways to get my hands on it. Finally, found it on BookMooch and had it shipped from a kind person in the Philippines.
This was my first venture into science fiction, and it's very light. Very interesting for kids to read, as I was reading the first chapter to my brother, I picked up on some very heavy and important messages about earth that I missed when we read it in science class. This book is great to read in one sitting, and is good for people who aren't sold on the genre yet, although it's definately aimed at Pre-adolescents, and adolescents.

I read this book the first time as an elementary school kid, and it stuck with me and sparked my fascination with survival/post-apocalyptic/sci-fi novels. But for some reason I remembered the ending differently--I thought everyone died, or was going to die--I don't remember that they were going to make it at all. Must be my natural pessimism! Still love this book though.
Remember reading an excerpt of this in an English book in early elementary school. Always wanted to finish it. Took me almost 30 years to find it.
