I didn’t realize how racist James Bond. In Casino Royal it was much easier to overlook. I know the times were different, but it was uncomfortable reading. Also Bond really isn’t that good of a spy. I may or may not read another. The movies are much more enjoyable.

Fleming finds the Bond formula in this volume. Here we see the starts of who Bond becomes through out the series. In the first book, Bond almost seems passive, and you wonder if he's even going to complete the mission.
Mr. Big definitely is the classic Bond Villain as there are several occasions where Bond is before him and you think this is it Bond is done for, and somehow he survives. There's the classic "Master Plan" that of course Bond foils by the end and the Bond Girl shows up that Bond must save.
I now feel the need to watch the movie and see how close and how different it is from the pages of the book.

This instalment in the James Bond franchise has basically everything you could want in a thriller novel: fighting, a terrifying villain, romance, tropical countries and carnivorous fish. I thoroughly enjoyed this. However, there was no big surprise or plot twist, which was slightly disappointing.
That being said, I’m really enjoying the James Bond books so far and this was definitely an enjoyable read.

This was a difficult read. I realize it was written in the fifties, and different language was used then, but there is just a lot of problematic themes, language, stereotypes.

Standard Bond book, seventy years haven’t been kind to this one with much of it now deeply offensive and racist but the story still stands as a good old fashioned spy tale.
