I remember the absolute HOLD the $150 bubble necklace had on the UVA Grounds from 2011-2012 and its copycats that could be found on Etsy for $20. I also remember how my coworkers would literally call J.Crew on a weekly basis to learn when the summer annual sale would happen every year. This was a great nostalgia read.

While I read the print copy, I found myself googling the more iconic images and merchandise referenced in the book, which oddly weren’t incorporated. I learned a lot about the brand that I’m sure I’ll come to appreciate when I notice its rejuvenated references to the past.

Similar to the author, I became disenchanted with the brand in the year(s?) leading up to the pandemic and the ones after. J.Crew used to be my first stop for professional attire and I adored my Teach For America t-shirt as well.

It’s hard to know if J.Crew has recaptured its magic or if influencers are starting to peddle its wares harder than in the years prior. Nonetheless, I felt encouraged to take a closer, second look in the months since reading this book to learn whether J.Crew is having a comeback moment. Only time will tell.

Four stars because you have to care about this brand to stay invested all the way through. Otherwise, you’ll notice the slog in the middle/towards the end.

Fascinating read about the mixture of fashion and culture. Learned a lot and found it very interesting

An interesting read in business, fashion, trends, and LBOs. A story that captures so much of the 80s through COVID by focusing on a single brand and its players.

My brother-in-law (that was fun and new to say!!) recommend this one, and he was so right! I loved this! It reminded me a lot of Empire of Pain, telling the story of a company’s history, especially focusing on the eccentric family that founded it. Here we have the tale of J.Crew, which I was FULLY obsessed with circa 2008-2012. It was also a really interesting take on American fashion retail overall for the past 4 decades. I learned so much and had a blast learning it! Who knew I enjoyed reading about company histories?
