Cici loves a good mystery! When she and her friends see an old man lugging paint cans through the forest, Cici will do anything to unravel the enigma of the painter. But when she ignores her friends, lies to her mother, and takes advantage of her writing mentor, Cici could lose everyone she loves if she doesn't learn to curb her wild curiosity.
This edition includes volumes 1-2 of Cici's story.
I adore the beautiful illustrations with soft colors and clean lines. Every page is gorgeous, and I read it slowly so that I could enjoy each panel.
Cici's story is imaginative and whimsical. The plot is interesting and charming, with lots of varied characters. It's such a sweet story of friendship, reclaiming the past, and learning to trust.
I love that Cici is initially intrigued by the mystery, but then she truly wants to help people and make their lives better. She has a generous heart, but her actions are sometimes misplaced. She has such great character development!

I loved the art style of this book and the color palette--so visually pleasing! The format of this one is graphic novel interspersed with text heavy pages (Cici's journal) which is really well done. A lot more text than most graphic novels, but not an overwhelming amount! Each story follows a mystery that Cici (who is a bit nosy) is trying to solve, sometimes at the expense of her friendships and relationship with her mom. I liked that both of the mysteries dealt with elderly people, so there was some great showing of how middle schoolers can interact with elderly people (sometimes my students are afraid of people generations older than them). I also liked how Cici's flaws are explored and she has to learn how to apologize and repair harm that she causes. Highly recommend for graphic novel collections!

The art was nice and I liked the messages, but I couldn't really connect with it, not sure why.
The artwork in this one is so beautiful - I love the vivid colours and the watercolour-esque style. The characters are quite good, and the mysteries were really great (both were sweet and sad, with a little hope).
However, the character of Cici actually irritated me quite a bit, so I had trouble relating to her throughout the books. I was more interested in her mystery characters than in here. So, a nice diversion, with gorgeous artwork, but not super engaging.

This is a very sweet book. Throughout it, the values of curiosity, dedication, community, friendship and kindness are highlighted. Cici is also taught later in the story that it's important to balance her intrigue into people's lives with respect towards them, and towards those she relies on for help solving her mysteries. Learning to improve your empathy for others and admit when you were wrong is an important skill for anyone to practice, and one that may be especially new for young readers. I appreciated that while there are times Cici's mother doesn't understand how meaningful her daughter's adventures are to her, she's never portrayed as the villain in her story. The first volume ends with Cici realizing that to have a good relationship with her mother, she must put effort in too.
I also enjoyed how this book was formatted with Cici's journal pages to begin the comic and intersect with it. Cici's writing and art was very entertaining, and gave us more insight into who she was as a character. I look forward to reading the second volume once it becomes available at my library.
