i just loved the art work in this and i loved how inspirational it will be to younger children. I loved it !
Cici's drawings and the beautiful comic illustrations will capture the attention of young readers as well as spark their creativity.
3.5 stars
Appeal Terms:
Character: flawed, michevious, quirky,
Storyline and Pace: plot-driven and fast-paced
Tone: sweet, whimsical
Illustration: charming
I thought this book was very heartfelt--I even got a bit misty-eyed at the end! It's really lusciously illustrated and I enjoyed the parts of the journal interspersed between the story which really gave more insight into Cici's character. I would totally read more stories with Cici in her quaint little town.
Potential issues for young readers
It's a bit strange because the main character has a habit of lying to her mother. And really, the lying does not come back to bite her in the end. However, for young Cici, she does go through her own arc of learning about not using people like objects and gaining empathy.

I heard someone on a podcast describe this as Amelie meets Nancy Drew, and I think that says it best. I loved the illustrations so much. One thing that had me reluctant is the way Cici was out in the woods following a man she didn’t know when no one knew where she was. I thought about not keeping this book around for my daughter because I didn’t want putting yourself into a dangerous situation for the sake of a mystery glorified, but I decided I’d just talk to her about it instead. The second epistolary lIbrary mystery was so great.

I adored this sweet graphic novel. The illustrations are so, so breathtakingly gorgeous and I found the story to be quite touching. I love that Cici is an observer of everyone around her!
CiCi wants to be an author someday, so her mom buys her a journal to start practicing her writing. Cici also wants to be a detective. Her best friends are Lena and Erica. There are two stories within this book: The Petrified Zoo and Hector's Book. The Petrified Zoo is the story of a mysterious man who disappears into the woods each day with a parrot and comes back covered in paint. Hector's Book is about a woman who checks out the same book from the library week after week. Cici's Journal is set in France. It starts out in journal format then switches over to graphic novel style.
The illustrations are lovely, in a watercolor style, but also look to have some color pencil strokes. In addition there are background pages in places where you can see some of Cici's handwritten notes, photos taken by her friends and postcards they have sent as well. One of her friends is a bit grumpy and doesn't automatically go along with everything Cici does and says. They have a fight and Cici has to admit she was wrong and figure out how to make amends.
An excellent addition to a graphic novel collection, but won't appeal to all students. Give to your artsy kids, those who like strong female characters, and like a good mystery.
