I thought this was interesting. There are two stories in this and they both end happily, but it’s the middle I’m having trouble with. The mom has a LOT she needs to work on, her friend Erica is kind of the worst, and I don’t think all of the issues between everyone falls squarely on Cici like is depicted.
Although I do love both of the stories in the sense that Cici’s curiosity helps first restore a zoo and then discovers a hidden treasure trove of letters for people she didn’t know at first. I think her curiosity should be celebrated rather than knocked down by literally everyone in her life. She’s a kid! My god.
So, enjoyable, but also frustrating.

Cici is a daughter, a friend, a writer-in-training, and a detective. Once Cici discovers a mystery, she becomes obsessed. While the mysteries themselves are enough to keep curious readers interested, the book also reveals how Cici's obsessions effect her personal life and she makes revelations about how she should treat others. The detailed illustrations are gorgeous and reminiscent of works by Hayao Miyazaki. Each of the characters are richly depicted to accentuate their emotions. Young readers will have plenty to pour over in this book filled with journal entries, letters, and other interesting artifacts that bring Cici's experiences to life.
The pace can be a little slow but the art is beautiful and the stories touch your heart. I’m left with a lot of questions about her mom, but I think that is for a reason.
