I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who is into world-building for creative writing, gaming, or whatever. The author takes fossils or facts we may or may not recognize and spins them into a vignette of a strange ecosystem in earth’s history. Instead of saying something like, “there was a time when mushrooms grew 9 feet high,” the author describes an alien world that you can actually imagine, with creatures nesting in the mushroom trunks and the domino effect that happened if one fell over, since they lacked roots to hold them steady. There’s one chapter for each geological period the author choses to cover.

Some favorite things I learned:
- there was a time when the seas were teeming with life but the land was basically the surface of the moon
- shelled eggs were the key to allowing sea creatures to come on land - eggs brought a little “sea” along for the developing embryo
- roots created the earth we recognize- without being able to break up rocks and access minerals, plants would not look anything like what they do today
- warm-bloodedness may have been an adaptation to allow animals to be nocturnal. If you’re cold-blooded, you’ll probably be too cold at night to be active

I feel a bit bad giving such a low review when the book was so brilliantly written.

Unfortunately, most of this book went entirely over my head. It’s my own fault, as I hadn’t done my research before picking it up. I thought it would be more accessible to those without a science background, but it was so technical in places, that I found it really hard to follow.

It was beautiful and the imagery was stunning. I also liked the message that the book was trying to convey. Sadly, it just wasn’t written for someone like me!
