An excellent and inspiring read. My only complaint is that there isn't more of it

Loved how we went backwards in time through this book!
adventurous informative reflective

This book was tough to get through- at least for someone with no paleontology background, who simply ventured blindly to it. It left me wishing I was smart enough to absorb all the information. At times, it felt as if I were walking blind through a gigantic museum, stepping into unknown worlds while trying to come up with an image that made justice to the detailed descriptions the author brings forth in each chapter. Maybe my lack of imagination is to blame, but I did struggle to conjure up these worlds. If read in quick succession, it all becomes a blur.
Even so, I have learned new things, and it has been a fascinating journey backward through Earth's history. Thomas Halliday has accomplished an amazing feat in condensing 500 million years of information in barely 300 pages.

A really great journey through the past with excellent descriptions of the world as it would have looked during each of the eras the book traverses. Each chapter centers around a different area where there is a significant fossil record from each era, starting with the Pleistocene and all the way back to the ediacaran where multicellular life is quite new. It's a super fun and interesting book. The only thing is I wish there were more pictures of all the different species that he talks about. Good to have a internet search at your fingertips to get more out of what the author is writing about.

So detailed, you get a real feeling of what landscapes used to look like over the course of history. If you weren’t already, you definitely will be fascinated by the diversity of animals, plants and ecosystems that have inhabited the Earth after reading this book. It shows the beauty of biodiversity throughout millions of years, and confirms the need to put all our effort in conserving the species around us in the present day. I also really appreciated the maps attached to every chapter/time period, but would have liked more drawings of the mentioned species.
