This was Agatha Christie’s first book ever – and unfortunately definitely not one of her best works. It was a good enough mystery, but I found myself plodding through it to get it over with. Hastings was a very dense sidekick, and Poirot isn’t quite the Poirot in the later books – I suppose Christie was still figuring out her characters.

After being gripped by And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express, I was excited to pick up another Christie novel given this was her first Poirot. Overall, the mystery was compelling but I wasn’t as gripped through the entire story compared to others of Christie’s. I wasn’t slightly dissatisfied at the final reveal of the mystery/ crime, but I do appreciate how she is able to reveal things that are unexpected.
Great intro to Hercule Poirot. Didn't realize that this was also Agatha Christie's first book! How fun to see how she got her start. Fun detective mystery that really created the template for so many of our favorites today. Will definitely be reading more books by her and in this particular series.
This was the first book that hooked me on Agatha Christie novels about 12 years ago. I re-read this book recently, and did enjoy it, but not as much as Christie's other works. The readers are introduced to Hercule Poirot, and I fell in love with him again. However, the plot drew on toward the end, especially during the court scene.

A classic murder mystery. It started losing me towards the 4/5 mark but circled back around for a somewhat-satisfying ending.
