Real life problems discussed within a gaming world? Genius!
This graphic novel promised so much, and sadly it didn’t pull through. In the beginning, it brings up so many great topics that aren’t discussed a whole lot. However, by the time the ending rolls around, it’s almost as if it dropped each of these problems in order to have a happy ending. One that isn’t even realistic. I really wanted to love this, but I just couldn’t.
The colors and the art style was just about the only thing I loved.

i actually enjoyed this more than i thought i would! i’m definitely not a gamer but the storyline was still easy to follow. i really liked the main character and the art was fantastic as well.
Eu nunca me surpreendi tanto com uma HQ! Fala muito sobre alguns problemas políticos e econômicos!
I continue to enjoy these [a:Jen Wang|1557381|Jen Wang|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1283470701p2/1557381.jpg] graphic novels, both for their content/plot and for their ability to make me "feel seen" with splashes of Chinese language and culture.

I wish this was longer! I've loved some of Cory Doctorow's novels like a decade ago, but I was really moved by this story, which I read in one sitting. It so succinctly showed the internet's power to connect people across countries and cultures, even languages; the organizing power of unions, workers banding together to demand better working conditions, wages, and health coverage; the consequences of thinking things work similarly everywhere, working through culture clash and learning from each other; and the trials of impoverished youth who have to work to survive from a young age. I do really wish the novel was longer and delved deeper into nuance though, because the ending was very simplistic and fairytale. The art is lovely, the world inside the game particularly is beautiful. I really loved this graphic novel.

Teen read about capitalism/unionizing and the power of video games/online connection.
Gorgeous art -- some of my favorite of Jen Wang's work, I love what she did with the video game world. But the content of the book itself......white savior-y nonsense. Pass.
