I was taken aback by how much this graphic novel touched me. I thought it was going to be your typical teen gamer story, but from a female perspective. I was wrong. This book is deep and dives into the realm of social justice and behavioral economics. Doctorow's story explores how our decisions, online and offline, affect our lives and the lives of those around us, and how we can all do better by organizing for a common good. The artwork is gorgeous and the character's are full of heart and soul. I simply loved this graphic novel.

The messaging is a little heavy-handed, but I liked all the badass lady characters and the fact that the main character a. is plus-sized and b. dyes her hair to match her avatar's. A fun action/adventure story with a social message.

Note to self: you may be tempted to give this to children, but don't. Has some adult language and themes.
fast-paced

En del mere aktivistisk end gamingorienteret i forhold til min forventning, men god og interessant.

3.5 stars.

I thought I was going to be alienated by the content (as I no longer identify as a gamer girl, and have very mixed feelings about that past), but this was a lot more complex of a story than I realized, especially once I started to read the intro which talks about Doctorow's thoughts as an activist on activism, the internet, and more. Seems like a great soft way to get into contemplating what it means to live in this global society for YA (and adults :)), including what might happen if you try to help without really understanding someone's context.

The ending is a little too fairytale, which makes me a tad uncomfortable considering the reality of how I feel things often go down (especially re: organizing in China, I imagine). I did really enjoy the artwork though.

I loved the art <3 The story was meh.

Not a ton of growth for the main character. I like the colors used. I feel like I would have gotten more out of it if I played any games like this.
