I read Red Tent and decided that I would like to read more biblical-historical-fiction. It is a short book. A very easy read with the last of the book a bible study with questions. This book is recounts the life of Tamar. The author does an excellent job of filling the gaps of the biblical narrative with her speculation of what happened.

i had... a lot of issues with this book. some personal, some theological, and a lot of how her passivity and "silently taking her abuse" was romanticized. but not enough spoons to go in depth.

Unveiled is Francine River's novella exploring the story of Tamar entering Judah's household as the chose wife for Judah's eldest son, Er. Er dies leaving Tamar childless. Tamar is given to Judah's second son, who refuses to father a child with Tamar to continue the lineage and receive the blessing due Er. God kills him. Eventually, Tamar is reduced to prostituting herself with her father-in-law. Judah learns of her pregnancy and demands her death until he realizes that he is the father. Judah acknowledges Tamar's sons (they are twins), and the lineage of Jesus continues.

Well written and very easy to get through. Anyone reading this has to understand that it is a biblical historical fiction, but I felt like Francine Rivers tried her best to keep it biblically based. I really appreciated all of the scripture at the end of the book so that you could go back and read the story yourself.

This book was short, but not sweet. Tamar’s story in the Bible is brutal and unjust, but God’s faithfulness to Judah despite his sin to Joseph is evident and encouraging.

So glad I picked up this novella! I never gave much thought to the story of Tamar in my Bible reading, but I’ll never skim over it without a second thought ever again. Even though the author obviously took creative liberties while retelling her story, it was beautifully done and historically and biblically accurate/believable. I’m so very much looking forward to the other Lineage of Grace novellas and hoping they will paint these women in a new light to me just as this first one did.
