While I have never found myself drawn to religion, and certainly never in a position to welcome the idea of Christian Nationalism, I would be lying if I said the concept didn't fascinate me. From how people get to a point of craving theological dominion over all, to how they then deconstruct those ideas to live a better, open-hearted life the process of going from the extreme to the rational is fascinating. April Ajoy does a fantastic job of reflecting on her past actions, beliefs, and their impacts on the world around her while also maintain a strong, clear sense of ownership over the harm she caused before her journey into deconstruction. Even if you aren't at all interested in religion or religious yourself, Star Spangled Jesus is a fun, informative, and occasionally funny read. Very insightful yet not heavy enough to spark that intense feeling of fear and hopelessness I tend to feel when thinking about how Christian Nationalism is infiltrating the public and political spheres of the US.

this book was like reading a book of my life. April has a very similar background to me and has made much of a similar journey that I have out of Christian nationalism out of hateful Christianity. people who are on the edge of Christian nationalism should read this book and really understand the harm the Christian nationalism causes to people who believe differently than us which is not what Jesus ever called for.

Interesting experiences in Christian Nationalism. It got a bit detailed for me on past experiences, but I thought the author’s realization that Christian Nationalism is NOT about following Christ was inspirational.
