I liked this one even better than the first. I didn't know how I was going to feel about William as the hero. He was an interesting character in the first book, but he was great. Much more complexity and depth of character which I really liked.

Anyway these books are fantastic so far. I'm a big fan.

The series started focusing in one direction, but this took a bit of a turn. I liked the characters more in this one than the first. It looks like I'm not the only one, as the next two also follow the family from this book, not the first from what I can tell. It's not as good as the Kate Daniels books, but I'll probably re-read it at some point.

I did enjoy Bayou Moon but I found the plot a bit convoluted with all the different factions and bizarre magical abilities. For me it was not quite up to Ilona Andrews (very high) usual standards, but it was still a fun read.

Edit: on rereading it makes more sense and does work as a bridge book into the plots with spider.

So much happened in one book! you know how Author usually writes trilogies for couples? this felt like a whole trilogy stuffed into one book since The Edge does different couples per book.

TLDR: even starting from the 2nd book of the series, the worldbuilding and storytelling is TOP NOTCH, so it doesn't feel like I'm missing info. If anything! I'm invested in this world now; I wanna read the 1st one! XD

what a rollicking rollercoaster. at first I thought the first rising action plot point was an unnecessary side quest bc why
Spoiler did they need the house in order to find her parents?! she went to get a deed for a house that wasn't critical to the overarching goal of saving her parents! like the house wasn't gonna say sht!
ANYWAY.
Also this book v long, but a quick read (~450 pgs). I stayed up WAY too late bingeing it

I loved the development of cerise and william's camaraderie: it's witty banter, plain honesty, unexpected responses, and quirks that just fit each other. I was so happy they worked for/towards each other. I wanted to get more time with them at the end! They went thru all that shit just for 1 page describing their happiness?! More!

Her family! With such a large family it's easy to EITHER write characters that aren't distinguishable from others, or try too hard and write TOO quirky, cliche characters. Author strikes a very natural balance that doesn't feel forced at all. I genuinely am interested in all the family members and they feel real, like I'd know them. I almost want a novella about Aunt Murid, Grandma Az, or Lark (when she gets older), or Kaldar?!! lol
(EDIT: just found out the next 2 books are Kaldar and Richard, and I'm like.. half not as excited bc i wasn't expecting 2 full length books spent on these 2 men LMAO)

⚔️ POV: multi, third person
⚔️ SPICE: main focus was the emotional connection and build, but they do have a fade to black scene
⚔️ QUALMS: Why did william's forget to use his FAVOR in order to save her dad? That lady virai said she owed him a favor!! why he forget?!
Spoilerhe wouldn't have had to sign away 10 years of his life!

⚔️ MAGIC: very vividly described, and uniquely thought out! Impressive lore-building, I'm glad it's not typical 'magic' types, like it's strange magic, and I'm a fan.
⚔️ SPIDER: grl..... I FUKCING KNEW IT
⚔️ TRAITOR: I ALSO FUKCING GUESSED IT

Overall, I really liked this book. I found the characters of Cerise and William interesting and sympathetic, and their love story believable. Their banter made me chuckle quite a few times, and I always love it when a book can make me laugh. Also, I thought it was interesting to read a story where the heroine was basically a hillbilly in the swamp, part of a large, ridiculous family.

However, there were also a few problems:
-The writing wasn't always even. There were a few spots that were just awkwardly written, which would take me out of the story and make me wonder "Couldn't they have smoothed that out a little in the editing process??"

-There were far too many names to keep track of. Between the Hand's freaks and Cerise's family, I had a very hard time keeping people straight. This is a book that definitely would have benefitted from a family tree at the front, and a little list of the Hand's agents, with maybe a one to two word descriptor of each ("Hunter," "Plant guy," "Assassin," etc.)

-Minor quibble, but I felt the final misunderstanding between William and Cerise was just unnecessary. It didn't add anything to the book, and seemed silly after all that had gone before.

Still, this book hooked me and kept me reading, and I'm looking forward to reading the next two in this series.

5 stars.

Amazing story.

I got completely immersed into this book. As I read it felt like I was there with the characters and I was a part of their world.

Such a great story, William and Cerise were wonderful, and I just wanted to read 447 more pages of them and the surrounding people.

I can hardly wait to read the next one.

This series isn't my favorite in Ilona Andrews ones but I really like the universe in which the series takes place and this second book turned out really nice to read.

We meet again William the changeling who had been left aside at the end of the first book (that I found quite sad by the way) and finds himself forced to return to the Edge to find Spider and his team of freaks, a very dangerous man who seeks to start a war between Adrianglia and Louisiana (and makes Louisiana win of course)and with who William has a score to settle. But his mission will be more complicated than expected when he falls on Cerise Mar whose parents have been kidnapped, who is in the midst of a family feud and who seems to hold the thing Spider seeks at all costs.

If I had some doubts first about William, he finally turned out to be great, with humor, a perfect body and sooo funny. I immediately loved Cerise (just her name ... totally love it), her humor, her strength and at the same time the fact that she remains a girl like us with problems and moments of doubt.

We discover more things in this book about the world of Weird and the organization of the Edge (including the judiciary who sells dreams !!) I fell in love with the Mire and its bizarre creatures and especially its inhabitants, such as the family Mar who are all crazy but who I fell totally in love with !!
In short, I can't wait to read the next books to see what Kaldar and Richard become!

No one does world building like Ilona Andrews. It's a lush, rich world in The Edge series with these three overlapping boundaries creating a brilliant breeding ground for stories.

I hadn't realized that the Edge series wasn't concentrated around a single main character, but it only took a few chapters to get wrapped up in the new characters.

The bounty hunter and the hobo queen, who'd have thought it? Somehow she makes it works while spinning a story that wasn't afraid of a little collateral damage along the way.
