Endearing, biting, off-kilter, kind, and funny.

I usually enjoy short story collections. This collection however, left me utterly disappointed. Out of 11 short stories, I only moderately enjoyed about 4 of them, maybe 5, and moderately is pushing it. The rest were painfully unentertaining to read. After forcing my way thru this book, I am glad it was a first reads giveaway. I would have been even more disappointed if I had not only wasted my time, but also my money.

I got this as part of a mystery bag at my local bookstore. I would not have picked this up normally, since I dont like satire and wouldnt chose to read a collection of short stories.

After most of the stories, I was left thinking "why? Why would someone write this?" Because I dont get the point of this kind of satire. It doesnt make me feel good to read it, I dont feel more knowledgeable or a like a better person after reading it, I dont recognize anything in the stories that makes me want to change. I'm convinced satire is just not for me.

I will say though, I laughed (the way you unexpectedly laugh at a book or find something surprisingly amusing) three times while reading. But this is not enough to save this book in my eyes. Most of the stories were horrible. They were interesting and I know you're not supposed to like the characters and I didnt, but that doesnt make me happy about it.

Thanks to Algonquin for the free review copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.
This book is a collection of short stories that take on a vary sarcastic and satire tone. I enjoyed getting to read about how the author portrays all walks and stages of life. At times, I was laughing so hard while reading this.
I do love short stories and enjoyed even the really short ones.
There was a story that I couldn’t connect with that made me uncomfortable, so I didn’t finish it. Other than that, it was a decent read.

Coming back to this over a year later to say, this is one of my favorite books ever.
