Jabari Jumps

Gaia Cornwall

4.35 AVERAGE

Used with preschoolers and had faces with different emotions expressed posted around the room. Talked about being brave and using breathing to try to calm down when upset or scared, and had kids identify the emotions and talk with their adults about what made them (kids AND adults) happy, sad, scared/confused/surprised, and mad.

The story is cute enough (for some reason, I didn't care for the very last line--I found myself wishing the book had ended a page earlier...I dunno...) and I liked the way Jabari's dad interacted with Jabari about his fear.

However, one thing that really irritated me was the illustrations--not as a whole, as a whole they were great! But the print that shows through on parts of the white/pale illustrations...when I first saw it, I thought I might have had a misprint on my hands. But nope--it was there, throughout; very faint in some places and almost bold in others. It was distracting and, in my opinion, detracted from what were otherwise nice illustrations.

This book is as good if not better than everyone says it is. These beautiful illustrations just grab my heart. The relationship between the father and son squeeze all kinds of love into it. This is a must purchase for all libraries.

In this sweet quiet picture book, Jabari is ready to jump off the diving board. He has passed all the swim tests and is ready to take the leap. Except sometimes taking that first plunge can be scary. Through patience and encouraging words from Jabari’s father he finally overcomes his fears and gets the courage to jump off the diving board. A simple story with a powerful message. This lovely story is about overcoming one’s fears and taking that leap of faith. A wonderful read aloud that will foster discussions about overcoming fears and celebrating. A must have in elementary libraries.

Read to my neice before exploring the wonders of her first swimming lesson for the summer break.

This is a really cute picture book about a boy named Jabari who is a little nervous to jump off of the diving board. It's a quick read with great illustrations that teaches kids to overcome their fears.

It was fine. I did not think the story was anything new. Fairly predictable. Students were not very captivated. I did really like the illustrations though!

Gorgeous illustrations - I especially love the POV from the diving board - and simple, straight forward story. I read this with my 3rd graders and it led to a great discussion about being brave and trying new things.
