I thought this book did a great job capturing the experience of a kid try something new and scary, and it does it with context clues rather than outright saying "Jabar was scared," so kids reading can clue in on it and develop their critical analysis skills.
This is a cute book that would be great for any kid facing a fear or doing anything with swimming.
A beautifully illustrated story about grit, perseverance, encouragement, and growth. GO Jabari!
Jabari Jumps is a great book showcasing Everyday Diversity. Jabari just passed his swim test and he's ready to jump off the diving board. Step by step, Jabari gains the courage to jump! Jabari Jumps is Gaia Cornwall's first picture book and she also illustrates the story using pencil, watercolor, and collage then colors images digitally.
What a lovely message, great artwork, and great representation. Will use for a future storytime. Pools? Summer?
I was not expecting to like this so much! Usually books "about" a very specific topic- in this case, a boy overcoming his apprehension about diving- are pretty bland and forgettable. But this is just lovely, with great artwork and warm text. And I love how the father is so gentle with Jabari- rather than pushing him to get it over with, he gently encourages him and helps him see the challenge in a different light.
Jabari demonstrates courage as he attempts to jump off the diving board. So many kids will relate to his feelings.
