Jabari can swim, but his next challenge awaits...climbing the tall ladder at the pool so that he can jump off of the diving board. He gets cold feet and lets the other kids in line go ahead of him while he warms up and stretches. How will he work up the courage to jump?
A super cute book about overcoming your fears. A great summer story about being nervous on the diving board. The text is a little too long for storytime but would be great for elementary students.
I just love the support the father gives his son! He does not push him, just offers ideas and emotional support.
Loving relationship between an African American father and son - my new favorite picture book of the year! (However, the idea of Jabari doing a double backflip as his second jump from the high dive would make me have a heart attack as a mother.)
Used in both my Story Time and a Preschool class visit and worked great in both.

Such a lovely father in this story, understanding and also helpful.
Swimming. Summer. Bravery. Good for pre-K or outreach.
In this sweet quiet picture book, Jabari is ready to jump off the diving board. He has passed all the swim tests and is ready to take the leap. Except sometimes taking that first plunge can be scary. Through patience and encouraging words from Jabariās father he finally overcomes his fears and gets the courage to jump off the diving board. A simple story with a powerful message. This lovely story is about overcoming oneās fears and taking that leap of faith. A wonderful read aloud that will foster discussions about overcoming fears and celebrating. A must have in elementary libraries.
A beautiful story that teaches children to persevere and to look at daunting tasks in a new, positive way.
GREAT book - for a kid trying to psych themselves up for any big "bravery" step, even if it's not the diving board. And what a great, supportive Dad - giving a couple opportunities to step back, offering advice... well done!
Literally the only quibble I have with this book is Jabari holding his nose as he hits the water. I never let any of my swim lesson kids hold their noses! :-p
