Wasn't sure if it was gonna be for me after the first 30 pages... but it was. Beautiful story.

What a strange and intriguing little novel. At first I had no idea what was going on and was rather put off. Clarke's writing is as excellent as ever, even when channeled into a journal format (though there is a digressiveness to the prose that doesn't make it feel like a true journal would.). But the layers are gradually pealed back until everything is clear and wondrous. I actually think it could have ended a couple chapters sooner, with the decision to leave the Halls instead of where it does. The rest of the book is fine, but I think a somewhat more ambiguous ending might have fit better with the overall nature of the story.

strange and lovely little story. unfortunately i think the ‘twist’ wasn’t such a twist, but reading it without that expectation (i didn’t know there was meant to be one at first) led to the enjoyment of just a story, unfolding how it should. i like characters like piranesi that have a very undaunted and almost naive kindness that they give the world. this was refreshing to read because it was creative and gentle despite it’s material
