This was a great performance by Adjoa Andoh and story by Abi Dare. From Nigerian accent to British, and even surprisingly delightful car horns, Andoh’s performance really made the book for me. I had been feeling stuck for some time and feeling a lack of interest in many books lately. We decided we needed a really good book to pick things back up at Book Club and this one hit the mark. We chose this book for its reviews and in honor of Black History Month. It’s definitely devastating but positive and joyful in many ways as well. Hopeful.

👏🏼👏🏼This book was unexpectedly what I needed, when I needed it. While the events in the story are bleak, the story is told in a way that doesn't leave you feeling weighed down. The story tells the sad reality that so many young girls around the world experience. But reading it through Adunni's innocent and sometimes naive POV brings a lightness to the story without deterring from the actual situation. The balance was incredible and hard for me to really put into words.
challenging inspiring

The first time I picked up this book I struggled with it, but I came back to it later and ended up loving it. An excellent read.
