Great title, lovely cover, interesting concept.... but so, so over written and bogged down. I think there is a good story here, it just takes patience to find it within the florid writing.

This feels very classic science fantasy - think Pern or Acorna - a little bit of plot, slightly more sex and politics, but mostly world building & character relationships. The latter of which I think actively made this book worse for the sake of being called romantasy.
I assume the plot ratio will go up in the next book, given the developments in the last 10%, but it's not great if that classic science fantasy tried your patience or you expect the same level of world-building. The publisher should also stop trying to market or edit this series as romantasy: the romance aspect was too much tell, not enough show in this book. As it is, the romance is not at the forefront like modern romantasy, but more an element alongside action and politics like in more classic 'fantasy with romance'. At the same time, this is definitely not your parents' science fantasy with maybe half a page of open door spice - the author makes it very clear this book is a lot 'grittier' and 'sexier' from the outset.

Listened to it on audiobook. Didn’t really care about it until hour 10 of 21. Hated it and wanted to DNF but I had made it that far. This was a lot of nothing happening. We get it, girl, you are an emotional less bitch who is super horny around the king who is hopelessly in love with you. Lots of language and discussion that didn’t need to happen and just took up space like the author wasn’t allowed to say these words growing up and now has to find a way to weave them into every sentence. It was annoying and I probably won’t read the second one because this was a giant waste of my time. I actively disliked it.
