ehhhhh I’m debating if i want to give it 2.5 or 3 stars. This book did not have to be 700 + pages. If i hadn’t read this on my kindle i would’ve been struggling to get through it. I really skimmed the last few chapters of the book. TikTok really hyped this book up…

the writing is truly mesmerizing and the plot addictive, but it took me a while to get into it because of its complexity.

700 pages of nonsensical similes, thesaurus dumps, and overdone alliterations. Purple prose on a biblical scale. I don’t think I will ever forget reading things like “eloquently dressed” or a character having “carnal knowledge” of another’s infected wound. CARNAL KNOWLEDGE????? Please pause and think on that for 5 seconds. PLEASE!!!!!!

This was a wonderfully creative world, with fully immersive writing and amazing characters. I cannot wait until the next one comes out but some parts I felt were drawn out, some things had too much writing dedicated to it which made me want to skim read those parts after it got to be a little much. That’s why I can’t give it five stars.

holy shit I loved this book! Such a good fantasy. Such a good romance! It's a bit dark and gory, but so addictive! I LOVE Raeve. I would like her to be my murder wife, please. And the relationship between Raeve and Kaan?! PLEASE. Kaan is the ONLY man. Chef's kiss. 10/10. I'll take both of them thank you. I will be doing my best impression of waiting patiently until the next installment.

1. The main character had no depth, she didn’t have any dialogue that wasn’t some sarcastic remark and it only made her irritating rather than tasteful.
2. The world building idea was good, the execution poor. So many different things were introduced with zero background & with too much detail (I don’t care how to play the card game) or a lack of detail (I still have no idea about 90% of the concepts in here).
3. It felt as though the book was a make up of different specific scenes/tropes that the author wanted to include that didn’t fit the actual story. It felt like the MC just got tossed around to random places that had nothing to do with the over-arching plot just so the love interest could take part in popular tropes.
4. The multiple POV’s were odd. Having a POV introduced after reading 3/4 of the book, just for her to have the same lack of depth & snarky remark problems as the MC was slightly jarring. Her part to play in the story could have been cut down to one chapter of finding the item she sought.
5. Other characters introduced just seemed regurgitated & slightly repackaged from a myriad of other similar book characters.
6. The word count should have been halved at the least.
