I wanted to like this book, but the writing felt really weak compared to Kingfisher's other novels. Kind of a predictable story. Still a comfy, easy read though.

This is more of a 3.5 which I would usually round up to 4 stars for GR ratings purposes, but since I gave the first book 4 stars, and I think book 1 was a little better, I’ll list this as 3.

A continuance of the first book, the plot gets a little more plotty and it’s a little faster paced.

Lots of people complaining about the romance between Caliban and Slate in this book but for me it was the standout. I adored it! I loved the push and pull of their dynamic, how they both had their own issues and priorities and yet still couldn’t fight the connection between them. Extremely satisfying romance with yearning and angst and a good resolution at the end.

These are my first T Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon books and I am very pleased with how much I enjoyed them.

For a sequel felt pretty on par with the first one in terms of timing and adventure even though we are limited to this one city as opposed to traversing landscape. Felt pretty slow for me at times but overall it was a good read and the world and main chaos was interesting. Brother Edmund stole my heart and I hope he has a wonderful life after being traumatized like this.

I liked the romance and story overall but the pace was slow and there were times I skimmed it
