I enjoyed it but would have liked it more if there had been more of the clocktaurs in the story. I was expecting a war from the series title. Instead the book focused too much on the romance, and the main character mooning over the paladin got really old after a while. This is coming from someone who likes romance added into the books I read. I just wasn't expecting it to be so much of the focus in this series. Also, the drama that ensues because of Slate's reaction when someone dies was so overblown and really annoyed me. I did love the gnolls though!

Loved this fantasy heist book with morally grey, witty characters, unusual dark magic, and a side of soft romance. I stand by what I said about volume one, I think this would have been stronger as a single standalone novel, maybe with a bit of the fat trimmed off, but nevertheless this was just pure fun and I'm looking forward to reading more in this universe. T. Kingfisher may owe you my life at this point.

I was already pretty meh on this after book 1, and I realized after putting this book down for a few days that I really did not want to pick it back up. The characters had decent banter, but I could not care any less about Slate/Caliban, and the worldbuilding in general felt really lacking. Mildly curious about how the plot works out, but not enough to keep reading.
