This is the fifth and final volume in Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series, a series toward the space opera edge of military science fiction. I've read all five books in the past month, and enjoyed every one of them. For me, the single best thing about the series is its central heroine, Ky Vatta. There are many plucky heroines in fiction, if perhaps not as many as there are plucky heroes. But there aren't enough heroines who are both as brave as Vatta and as competent. Her compassion is matched by her skill, and I love that. Without going into specific plot spoilers, I am happy to report that I found this fifth book a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the series.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

A satisfying end to a great series. Highly recommended for space opera fans.

3.5 stars. Enjoyed parts of it a lot, and I still generally love the series and the characters, but it was just a bit of a mess of an ending. And that last line? Really? For the end of an entire 5-book space opera?

The last of the Vatta's War series. I was a little disappointed. It felt like there were some loose ends, and the final action was unsatisfying, and over quickly.

To preface: I have very bad experiences with end-of-series novels.

Unfortunately, this book is no different. While Moon's prose is neither overly embellished nor embarrassingly bad, her book's readability cannot save itself from its trite plot and ending.
