I would've definitely not finished this book if it weren't for the Connections Challenge and I didn't want to pick out different books. Too many storylines, too slow, and no resolution at the end. The only thing I did find interesting was the main character's papers explaining Horror movies to her teacher.

This book was a RIDE. It had me guessing until the end, especially with Jade as the main character because there were times where i trusted her judgment and others where I started to wonder if all this is in her head.

My only issue with the book was that there were some moments where i got pulled out of it because Jade's slasher talk had me trying to remember particular scenes with her. Theres also some unanswered questions I have but I'm guessing those answers might be waiting in book 2 and 3 so that's fine if thats the case.

Lots of people liked it, but for me? I was bored and did not care 😆
I loved The Only Good Indians, though!

I have seen maybe 10 horror movies in my entire life (and could probably name them here, but I'm not going to do that) so while I'm not familiar with the names and scenes and references, I do know the structure and archetype and formula of a slasher. And Jade's obsession with them, with picking out these clues and calling out each time reality clicks into place with the archetypes was the perfect slashery blend of dramatic irony (where the camera/POV knows something the characters don't) and a deeper sadness.

Jade's story, outside of the slasher obsession, is compelling and familiar and I love that we see her confronting the dichotomy of what she tells herself vs what is true/how others see her. I also just loved her perspective - how she knows everyone in town, how she refers to them, how she selectively pays attention to some things and not others. It felt very real that way.

Also, the actual slashing was fun and campy and a little bit ridiculous (but in a self aware way), as every good slasher should be.

A 90s slasher that promises a twist but unravels to be an erratic splash of different ideas. This book won’t scare you, it reads like a B-list slasher movie with a gothic Native American slasher fan as the lead character that’s trying to piece together a puzzle that turns out to be an absurdity in reality thus just a slasher not true horror. The writer is not good at describing the violence to make your skin crawl, I was hoping you’d get sucked in the brutality and find a fun twist but it won’t surprise many.

Honestly, what even was this book. You’re stuck inside the main characters head the whole time and their obsession with slasher movies only for the ending to make no sense. The writing itself wasn’t bad but the plot… it was a doozy.
