An interesting premise and the star-powered narration of Nathan Fillion couldn't salvage this one for me. First off, Fillion reads too fast. He's a good enough actor, and he did a good job with the characterizations, but he's just not a audiobook narrator by trade. As for the story, it went off the rails fairly quickly after an interesting first act, and I entirely stopped caring what would happen to any of the characters -- both the humans and the sentient ship.

4.5...

Not your typical 'explore a planet and watch life devolve around you' story. I highly recommend giving this a read... or if you listen to the Audiobook, Nathan Fillion does a fantastic job! Either way, enjoy this a-typical space survival story!

The Salvage Crew by Yudhanjaya Wijeratne, narrated by Nathan Fillion.

A snarky AI Overseer takes a fresh crew of salvagers to a far off planet to salvage a crashed U.N. ship. What could possibly go wrong?

If you said “everything”, you’re well familiar with the tropes involved with this subset of sci-fi. But the hard science was written well and and was not boring, the characters had their charm and while a few of them were questionable, I found myself rooting for them all the way. The narration by Nathan Fillion was wonderful and made it hard to stop listening.

If you have spare credits and are looking for some sci-fi, I highly recommend The Salvage Crew!
Five happy penguins, reclaiming the reading throne.

I picked this audiobook up thinking it was a sort of light-hearted romp in space.

Friends, it is most decidedly NOT that.

A salvage crew led by an uploaded human AI finds something unexpected when they arrive to salvage stuff from a crashed colony ship.

The story unfolds a bit slowly. The crew experiences a lot of confusion about what's going on (understandably so, as it turns out.) The final revelation takes them somewhere they never imagined.

I listened to the audiobook, and it was fine. Nathan Fillion did a decent job.

There's a lot of poetry in the book, and lots of zen references that might have gone over my head. I think it might be useful to read the book again with my eyes instead of my ears, to see what all that looked like.

Solid 3.5 stars, though I think the writing was better than that, as was the imagination. I was just occasionally confused.
However
SpoilerI'm always a little dubious about the way a galaxy and millennia spanning machine intelligence can fall so quickly into colloquial speech. It always seems to me like it should be harder, even maybe impossible, to understand something so alien. But maybe my mind is just too small.

Name: The Salvage Crew
Author: Yudhanjaya Wijeratne
Genre: Sci-fi, Fantasy, Drama, Adventure, Space and Technology
Rating: 3.5/5
Review:
The service crew with an interesting science fiction novel. The protagonist, a digitised human is leading a salvage crew on an uninhabited planet for his second expedition. His team, which consists of Simon, an inexperienced young man, Anna, a girl who is running away from her real identity and Milo, cannot considered the perfect crew, not even a good one.
They arrive on a distant planet to salvage an abandoned UN starship. But when they land on the planet Urmahon Beta, they encounter something they never expected. The supposedly uninhabited planet is not at all what it was supposed to be. It is covered with dangerous megafauna and terrifying high-powered gear. Now, they have to encounter with their nightmare, they must save themselves while secrets that terrify humankind unfolds in front of them.
The protagonist is really interesting character, I likes his backstory as well. The characters are well developed in this book. The readers will be fascinated by the technology and society developed in the story.
I am giving this book 3.5 stars because I felt that the story did not get to me until the second last part of the book. While listening to this audiobook, I lost interest after chapter 10. But I had to get through the book. This book is perfect for the sci-fi lovers as well as space enthusiasts.

I enjoyed how this book started, and it i knew it was going to be interesting. Then at the half way point, everything goes wrong and I couldn't put this down.

A great story that turned out to be disappointing.

It starts in the best possible way. An AI, more specifically an uploaded human mind, and his crew, three actual humans, land on a deserted alien planet to recover the valuables from a shipwreck: thus the title.

Their mission starts up on the wrong foot when the landing doesn't go as planned. They end up ways away from their intended drop site, with little to help them in this alien world. They have no other option than to brave the unknown and overcome some major hurdles. They need to finish the mission in order to get the payday and go home.

Mixed in with the description of this planet, we get quite a lot of science talk that grounds this story in the realm of the believable, making this a great sci-fi book for those who enjoy a more grounded world.

After a few adventures and mishaps, we meet the main antagonist of the story. Unfortunately, that's when the book lost most of its appeal to me. It goes from a great sci-fi to a mediocre mystery that left me wanting a better ending.

All in all, I would say the book deserves respect for what it achieves, in terms of worldbuilding, before the unsatisfying ending.

I had a good time with this book, and that's why it earns a 4-star (bordering on 3) rating.

Couldn’t really get into it and surprisingly didn’t like Nathan Fillion.
