The Third Twin

Ken Follett

Struggled a bit with this book - found the sexist, patriarchal attitudes grating. Perhaps that was supposed to be part of the book? The technology aspect of the book has dated badly too. Good suspense though.

Although it's quite old (floppy discs!) and thus not really up to date with the science, it was a nice enough story for a slow afternoon. Not enough plot twists for my thriller needs, but overall solid.

not sure what to say about this...at first i didn't like it much, the characters are predictable and somewhat one-dimensional cliches. similarly parts of the plot were hard to believe, but that allowed for a pretty fun story where everything happens just at the right time to keep up suspense. also worth to note that there's a lot of sexual assault in here, but as someone who completely dropped a book before for gratuitous rape scenes, this one was more bearable in the way it was written. towards the end, the story did grip me and i wasn't able to put the book down for the last ~200 pages. once it became clear that
there were more clones
, i was excited to find out what they would turn out to be like. jeannie's attraction to steve also became more credible with time, he still sucks though - getting mad/frustrated that she decides not to sleep with him because she can't know if he's not the guy who just brutally assaulted her and is trying to kill her, and what the fuck was that bit where he kind of considers raping the traumatized maid? but he's such a good man that he decides against it!

Trigger warning for violet r*pe and sexual assault. Was not expecting that based on the summary on the back of the book, but it’s a huge part of the plot.

This book was a random find for me, and despite being a little outdated, it was at least interesting enough to keep reading, with an interesting plot that made me want to see how it all worked out. Plus Jeannie is a strong heroine, with my only annoyance to Ken’s writing of her to be the weird romantic subplot.

Would I recommend you read it? Probably not.

Unfortunately for the “suspense thriller” aspect, the title itself is a spoiler, and none of the shocking revelations were ever really that shocking due to the title and hints throughout the book. The ending was also very rushed and fairly unsatisfactory. There were also just some crazy conveniences that allowed Jeannie and her partners to find all the info they needed as they needed it with barely any barriers.

SPOILERS: The Jeannie & Steve love story was pretty ridiculous. It was infuriating that Jeannie believed a random guy she just met over her friend who said he assaulted her. And then she falls in love with him in a week despite also being assaulted by his exact look-a-like. I can enjoy a rushed, passionate romance story on occasion, but maybe not as a subplot of a suspense thriller where the love interest is accused of rape before the two even truly know each other, yikes.

Very intriguing story line. Graphic r*pe scenes felt unnecessary

Intriguing, adventurous, and dramatic. A nice thrilling book to pair with a glass of wine on a quiet night in.

Little Free Library find - the premise sounded really interesting so it got me. Quite predictable and hoaky at times. It was actually fascinating to read a book from 1996 that alluded to things/words that were popular back then: pocketbooks, Datsuns, Snoop Doggy Dogg, VCRs, etc... a flash back to when I was young.

I haven't read any Ken Follett books before and probably won't venture to read many more (although have heard good things about Pillars of the Earth). His writing style was pretty basic for my taste, and honestly he did not do a great job of describing women's emotions (or women in general). Reminds me of the reddit post about a guy being a dodecahedron.

Interesting but cliched

Captivating read! I read it straight through in an afternoon just because I couldn't put it down.
