The Witches of New York

I wouldn't change a thing about this story. It's a well balanced ride through a late 20th century New York that's filled with mystery and a good number of sobering truths. McKay does a great job of diversifying her cast and describing the challenges created by their individual identities in a way that is often subtle and always elevating. Thank you, Ami McKay. Wherever you are, I wish you well.

An absolutely lovely book! I loved how grounded it was in its historical setting, and the ways the different magics were woven together (the raven and dearlies were my favorite elements.) I wish I could spend an afternoon at Tea and Sympathy!

I listened to the audiobook, which had a masterful narrator!

I liked the raven
more like fantasy than historical fiction (which j thought it was)

inconclusive ending smh

Both on the preachy side, dragging its feet yet also a little rushed. I felt like I wanted more from this book at every turn, either a little more magic or a little more interpersonal play, a little more horror in the treatment of the evil preacher or a little more fantasy from the dearlies. I wanted another 50 pages but I feel like it would just feel slower. Despite that I found the story it was trying to convey interesting, I like all the characters, and it generally feels like a precursor to Grady Hendrix’s “witchcraft for wayward girls” which will take place only a generation or two after the leading ladies of this story.

Written charmingly but the main character was a Mary Sue if there ever was one and the story was predictable.

An utterly cosy autumnal read, with witches and sisterhood, religious fanatics, murder, ghosts, a sprinkle of romance and a lot of tea. Quite violent but ultimately very comforting. A great book to get the spooky season started.

2 1/2. Fine with. Predictable anti climactic finish. A little too long for the story and a little too PG in developing characters.
