I picked this book up on a whim from my local library, not realising it was a part of a series of books featuring the main police officer. Thankfully, this read well as a stand alone book. That said, there are parts that didn’t really feel like they need to be in there but I guess they do if you read the others.

Interesting plot which was pretty fast paced and kept me reading despite bits of it making me gasp aloud. It got to one point and it took and very dark turning and I wondered if I’d make it to the end. Glad I persevered because it was gripping and scarily, quite believable.

I received a free copy from Readers First in exchange for an honest review.

Wow that was a ride and a half, I'd read the first few chapters in the extract then just a few chapters after that a few days ago, but it was the weekend before i got into this book properly. I started reading from about page 80 in the morning and had it finished by evening, not often a book is that unputdownable for me, but i just had to find out what happened!

It starts off with the audacious kidnapping of a little girl from her own home in the middle of the night while her unsuspecting parents slept next door. I felt tense reading it as we follow the kidnapper through the house until he makes his escape with the girl.

He takes her home and introduces her to her new family - his wife and other daughter, who he had kidnapped 3 years earlier and had held prisoner in a room ever since. It was up to her to teach the new addition to the family what the rules were so they could all get along and he wouldn't have to punish them. The police are called in to investigate, but get nowhere it seems.

As if that wasn't enough, emboldened by the success of this second kidnapping he goes for a third girl, and this is where it all starts to unravel. I can't talk about the rest without giving away any spoilers.

The ending i did not guess at all, and kind of where it loses a star for me as i felt there weren't enough clues earlier to lead to the reasons, they were just kind of lumped on us in the last few pages. But the story from the get go to the end was a non stop thrill, as i said at the start, it's not often i read a whole book in a single day.

By all accounts the subject matter of this book is distressing in the extreme since it involves child abduction and trauma. Nevertheless I was hooked and yet again David Jackson does true justice to such a complex and sensitive topic with twists and shocks that keep you guessing and add grey to areas that were initially clearly black and white, right and wrong. The author is an absolute master of his craft with enough fear, trepidation, and tension to keep the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat, and yet not enough to go over the edge and be too much to read and handle.

Daisy is a 10 year old child who was kidnapped 3 years previously. Her “parents” for these last 3 years who she is forced to call “mummy” and “daddy” have not let her leave the same room in all that time. And now they have decided she needs a sibling. Which is when the case is opened to DS Nathan Cody’s department to investigate. The complex emotions and sheer terror as well as the maturity of Daisy as she has learned to cope with the confines and rules of her prison are beautifully narrated and are totally captivating and unpredictable. I could absolutely not have seen the ending coming and it absolutely tore at my heart.

This is a fantastic third book of the series and I heartily recommend reading it as part of this series due to the back story of DS Cody as well as the relationships and tensions within the police force that are built up over the prior books. Like the second book however, it is written to allow one to read it as a stand-alone if desired.

The seemingly perfect couple in your street....their daughter Daisy is kept locked in her bedroom 24/7, the father has decided it's time to get her a sibling or 2, as his wife will be even happier with more children. A spellbindingly dark read that held me captive from the very start. Complex characters, told from multiple points of view I couldn't put it down. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #dontmakeasound #davidjackson #thriller #goodreads #tea_sipping_bookworm #litsy #thestorygraph #amazonaustralia #bookgrocer #bookqueen #bookstagram
