Endymion

Another epic adventure from Dan Simmons!

Endymion takes place 274 years after the Fall of Hyperion. It has been foretold by forces unknown that Aenea, daughter of Brawne Lamia and the Cybrid John Keats, will exit the Time Tombs in this new future.

Father Captain De Soya of the Pax force, with little explanation, is given authority over all available resources the military/church has to offer to prevent this small child from achieving her objectives. Objectives that remain a mystery to him and those he commands.

Raul Endymion, via machinations of a very familiar person, is to rescue the young girl and be her protector and companion throughout her travels.

I have yet to read The Rise of Endymion, so I cannot speak for it, but thus far, Endymion is my favourite of the Hyperion series. The chapters alternate between the adventures of Raul, Aenea, and A. Bettik and that of Father Captain De Soya and his crew. The effect of this, is that nearly every chapter ends in a cliff hanger, making it impossible to put down.

Of course, the ending will leave you wanting more and I will be heading to my local bookstore this evening to pick-up the finale of this epic space-saga.

Unreal disappointment for me. Hyperion duology was a total 10/10 masterpiece but I could only make it about 70% through this one. Just an incredibly dull adventure story that lacks any of the substance (or anything, really) of the first two books. The worldbuilding isn't that interesting, since most of the cool technology is now gone and there's just endless boring church guys ruling the planets now. There's a weird dynamic going on between the protagonist and a 12 year old time traveling girl that I'm happy I stopped reading before it becomes a romance. None of the characters are interesting. The overarching plot and themes aren't just left without any meaningful new additions, they're actually rendered lesser.

Can't imagine a bigger dropoff in quality for a sequel than this
