Oh, Iris. Iris, Iris, Iris. Intense, obsessive, alienating Iris. Happy crier, idiot piner, giver of zero fucks and simultaneously a lot of fucks Iris. Blunt, selfish asshole with the emotional range of a teaspoon Iris. I need someone to read this novel and reassure me Iris and I are not the same person. Stat.

In other news, I enjoyed this book in a way I haven't enjoyed reading in awhile. It was exactly my sense of humor and there were a lot of #relationshipgoals moments. Like I would work the standing in line for funnel cake and driving to bus stop bits into wedding vows level of #goals moments.

Plus there were boy bands and Shakespeare and MMORPGs, and "nine inch subs, fifty percent more than a six-inch Subway sub" sandwiches.

I liked it kind of a lot?

And laughed out loud a ton?

A witty and touching YA contemporary with references to Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." So enjoyable. I loved the affectionate rendering of gaming, band love, and all things geeky. The friend and family dynamics were funny and piercing.

It was only with great effort (and steely defiance) that I didn't cry.

Thank you, Emma Mills, for a truly lovely read.

This book was not really for me. I picked it up expecting a YA sapphic romance. I can’t tell if that’s my own fault or if the description mislead me, but this book is not a romance and the main character is not sapphic. I think this book was well-written and captures the high school experience well, I just have personally grown out of YA contemporary. I feel like I always have a problem with not fully connecting to the writing style or characters and this book was unfortunately no different. I did enjoy this book more than Lucky Caller (honestly didn’t realize they were by the same author until TION came up) and think Emma Mills is good at what she does. If YA contemporary is your thing, I think you’d really like this book and I think I would have enjoyed it much more if I’d read it back when that was my favorite genre.
