This is a fabulous popcorn Murder Book, a standalone from the same author who wrote the 2 series I’ve read (and whose latest that merges them together comes out IN TWO DAYS and I am so excited!!!!!!). Anyway. Brooding, damaged cop; 3 survivors (not victims) who form a club; one possibly wrongly-accused rapist-murderer. It’s my kind of book.

It’s a book about sexual assault survivors. Lisa Gardner is just a great writer.

Gardner brings it all together is a very intense book. We meet Meg, Carol and Jillian, the woman of the survivor's club who put their rape right in the public's face and kept at the police to find their rapist. Well, we are about to begin the trial of Eddie Como for the brutal attacks on these woman when he becomes a victim himself. Griffin is assigned lead on this case, as he is first up returning to duty after taking a grief leave from the job. And if that isn't enough, meet David Price AKA Candy Man, convicted of killing and molesting children while living next door to Griffin. Gardner characters are strong but flawed, she exposes the pain of rape and how it affects just not the victim but everyone around them and she gives us evil with nothing held back. After reading the prologue, I was quite anxious to see how they would get around DNA. Because we all know from watching those CSI shows that DNA doesn't lie. It may not lie but it can sure be manipulated to tell a different truth. David is the mastermind behind setting up Eddie for a big fall, using a patsy to do his evil work and setting all this action into play.

Sort of a confusing start with multiple characters introduced all at once but a great ending. It had me on the edge of my seat.

The killings at the start are pretty graphic, however the rest of the book is really good!

A surprisingly good standalone novel. I liked the characters and the story. I could even go back to the protagonist for another story or two. Interesting characters.
