I think I'll be very interested to read the whole Ruth Galloway series. This first book is a great, well written thriller. I love the archaeology side of the story and Galloway and Nelson are a great pair of characters to follow.
The setting is so desolate and beautiful, I loved every scene on the Saltmarsh. The way Ruth is drawn to it no matter how lonely or eerie it feels says a lot about how complex a character she is.
There are a lot of red herrings thrown around throughout the plot, designed to add suspicion to everyone. But unfortunately I guessed the ending pretty early on and didn't really waver in my verdict. But it doesn't happen often and it didn't take much away from the book! There were also a few touches I didn't predict to keep me guessing right to the end, and I love some of the little set ups that are in place for the next book.

Moderate: Police brutality
I really enjoyed this book….
However:
The main character was very focused on her weight at the beginning, which I found off putting.
And
**TRIGGER WARNING**
A cat is murdered.

An excellent debut mystery featuring forensic archeologist Ruth Galloway, a single overweight 40-year old who lives alone near a Saltmarsh with her two cats. When human bones are found in the Saltmarsh, Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson asks Ruth for help identifying the bones. He believes it may be the body of a girl who was kidnapped out of her home and missing for the past 10 years. The bones turn out to be from the Iron Age, but Ruth soon gets caught up in the investigation when another girl disappears.
Wonderful, unique characters populate this book, and the two main characters of Ruth and Harry are sympathetic yet flawed people who you can't help but like. The mystery of the disappearing girls is well handled and you don't guess how it is resolved. I really enjoyed this first book and am looking forward to the second book out soon. Four and a half stars.

I started this book and then it got automatically returned to the library so I checked it out again and finished it two months later. I have no idea why I felt compelled to finish it except that I started it and wanted to know how it ended. I disliked every single character in it, except maybe Cathbad who was a big ole softie weirdo. Ruth is a snob (she prefers documentaries to tv and kept talking about blond people, idk), the cop is very cop-like, and I knew who the kidnapper/killer was the first time they were introduced to the story. I was like “ah, this is the one.” The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because I liked the ending which was semi happy.

Atmospheric and intelligent, The Crossing Places is about character and setting, The mystery is tied up with the setting deftly and altho I figured out most of the mystery fairly early on, I was unsure about much of it, enough to want to hurry through the book to find out how it all fit together.
Will definitely continue the series!

This had an atmospheric feel like "Broadchurch" and I loved diving back into an English mystery/crime series! The writing isn't particularly inspired, the characters are a bit flat (besides Ruth, though she seems stereotypical...also 39 isn't that old???), nor was the mystery very difficult to solve (thought the wrapping up happened weirdly...like the author wasn't sure how to write herself out of the mystery she had written), but it was a very fun read and I'm looking forward to reading more in the series. I'm interested to see how the author progressed throughout the series.
